The cornerstone of our campaign will be to halt the suppression on our civil liberties. History has taught us that fear can make people do things they normally would not do. Terrorists are a threat, but an even greater threat is the loss of our civil liberties. The Patriot Act's "Sneak and Peak" provision allows the FBI to come into your home, search your residence, and leave without telling you for up to six months. It has expanded the government’s powers under the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act to get warrants for wiretaps from special courts that are not subject to the same oversight as typical courts.
Another provision allows federal authorities to secretly search your hospital records, library records and many more different kinds of private records with no judicial review or notice. President Bush has further repressed the people by limiting free speech, attacking freedom of assembly and creating vast restrictions on the press in Iraq. One example of this has been forbidding any photography of flag-draped caskets returning home. The war on terror has turned into a war for freedom: our freedom. War holds far greater risks for our freedom than terrorism ever will. If we lose our civil liberties and America ceases to be the people government, then we will find out what terror really means.
